New Delhi, July 1, 2016: Rajat wanted to become a space scientist, said his uncle Thursday. “He had opted for science stream in Class IX, was good in studies and very sharp. He liked playing outdoor games and was very good at football,” said Rajat’s uncle, who also lives in Mayur Vihar Phase III.

Rajat’s family has been staying in Sunshine Apartments for two years. “We still don’t know what exactly happened. I don’t have the strength to talk about it,” said Rajeev (16), Rajat’s brother.

Rajat’s mother refused to come out of her room, even as a number of friends and acquaintances from the neighbourhood gathered around the house.

Lalit, a neighbour, said, “We are waiting for the post-mortem report to come so that we can understand what really happened. We are very close to the family.”

He added, “Rajat was a very docile boy. He would greet us very politely whenever we came to visit. “His mother is not even crying. She still can’t accept what has happened.”

Enraged by the alleged murder, friends of the family from the neighbourhood held a demonstration at the DDA market Thursday evening. The protesters also broke the paan kiosk owned by the father of the two brothers apprehended in the case. The mob also set the kiosk on fire.

The protesters alleged delayed action by police in the matter. “The police did not register the complaint when the body was taken to the hospital. They listened to us only after 11.30 pm. As long as we don’t put pressure on the police, they won’t listen to us,” said a protester.
