Ahmedabad, Dec 08, 2017 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the suspended Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar, during his Pakistan visit in 2015, had told people to remove him from the way to ensure peace between the two countries. Addressing a rally in Banaskantha’s Bhabhar, PM Modi added what could have been the intention behind such statement.

“Mani Shankar Aiyar told people when he visited Pakistan – remove Modi from the way and then see what will happen to India-Pakistan peace. What did he mean by removing me from the way. And what is my crime- that we have the blessings of the people,” said PM Modi. “What does it mean to remove someone from the way? Did Aiyar go to Pakistan to give my supari,” PM asked.

PM Modi and Congress have been at loggerheads after former diplomat Aiyar accused Modi of being a “neech” (uncultured) person. Later, Aiyar clarified that he is not a Hindi speaking person and wish to apologise if his remark has hurt the sentiments of opposition leaders.

Disapproving of Aiyar’s remark, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi said the party does not approve of such language against opposition leaders. “BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party. The Congress has a different culture and heritage. I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyer to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said,” Gandhi said.
