Madrasa student beaten and locked up for 2 days in Uttar Pradesh

Mangalore Today News Network

Lucknow, January 12, 2015: The jury is out on what’s worse: the fact that a student was beaten up black and blue and locked up for two days by a teacher, or the unrepentant assaulter justifying his behaviour as fair punishment.

An eight-year-old student of a madrasa in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, has alleged that he was beaten up by his teacher, Abdul Latif, with a baton after he had a fight with his nephew on January 2. The nephew is a classmate of the victim, Ali (name changed).

Ali has said that after the thrashing, Latif locked him up in a room for two days without food or water.

The incident at Madrasa Sunnat-ul-Uloom came to light when Ali’s father visited him on the evening of January 4. "My son started crying the moment he saw me and narrated the whole incident," his father told newspersons on Sunday.

"Latif came to the hostel at night, forced my son to remove his clothes, and then thrashed him mercilessly with a baton. I saw black and blue bruises all over his body," he said.

"I registered a complaint with the police and district administration on January 5. But no action has been taken against the teacher so far," he added.

The boy’s claims have since been substantiated by a medical examination as well as Latif’s own statement.

"The boy had committed a big mistake," Latif said of the incident. "We do punish students if they commit mistakes. There was nothing personal about it," he added.

The police say they are looking into the allegations. "We are collecting details about the incident. We’ll take action against the teacher after that," Superintendent of Police Abdul Hamid said.
