Kerala school in tripunithura granted leaves For menstruation Periods, in 1912

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 24,2017: A school in Kerala granted leaves to girls for periods about 105 years ago. This news is of utmost importance to the nation as there has been a raging debate within the country. A government school for girls in 1912 granted leaves to its students and staff in case menstruation even during an annual examination. The school was located in Tripunithura.

Recently Congress legislator urged the Pinarayi Vijayan government in Kerala to consider giving period leaves to office goers. The CM did not disappoint and assured to come up with a solution taking all points into consideration. P Bhaskaranunni in his book, Kerala in the 19th Century revealed that the decision of granting leaves during periods was made by the head master of the government school the headmaster V P Vishwanathan Iyer.

Tests in the ancient Tripunithura school were conducted regularly but some teachers and female students could not come to school due to menstruation. Considering the gravity of the situation, Iyer on January 19, 1912, approached the inspector of Thrissur school, states the book penned by Bhaskaranunni. Within five days the education director allowed girls to take leave on the day of menstruation and asked the school authority to rearrange an examination for the girls who fail to take an exam during periods.
