Kerala Landslide: Body of 4-year-Old found, Death toll touches 11

Kerala, Jun 18, 2018 : Three more bodies, including that of a four-year-old child, have been recovered from the landslide-hit area of Kattippara panchayat in Thamarassery in Kozhikode district.

 


The death toll from the landslide now rises to 11.

The bodies found on Saturday are that of Rinsa Sherin (4) and Nazrat (26). The third body is yet to be identified. "One more body is yet to be identified," an official of the Disaster Control Room Thiruvananthapuram told TNM.

Four persons, who went missing in the debris of the landslide, are yet to be traced .

On Saturday, a landslide was also reported near the PVR Water Theme Park in Kozhikode belonging to MLA PV Anwar. The MLA has been facing allegations of violating waste management guidelines and of functioning without the necessary permissions from the local panchayat.

On Friday, the body of a one-and-half-year-old-girl Rippa Mariam had been found.

According to reports Rippa Mariam is the granddaughter of Hassan (67) who also died in the landslide.

Hassan’s daughter Jannath (25) also lost their lives in the disaster. The search and rescue operations which were stopped on Friday night had resumed on Saturday morning. Three construction trucks were also used while a team of NDRF has also arrived.

The other people who were killed in the landslide include Dilna (13), Muhammed Shahabad (7), Muhammed Jaseem (5), Jaffar (45) and Abdur Rahman (60).

Heavy rains had triggered flash floods and landslides in several places in rural Kozhikode on Thursday. A red alert has been issued in Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasargod and Palakkad.

Meanwhile, the body of one out the two people who were missing following heavy rains at Nilambur in Malappuram was recovered.

Heavy rains coupled with strong winds have been battering the state for over one-and-a-half-months. With three more dead bodies, the death toll owing to rain related incidents is 46.
