JEE (Main) topper bags seat at MIT

Bengaluru, April 28, 2015, DHNS: Arindam A Bhattacharya, an engineering aspirant from Bengaluru who according to certain estimates secured the highest score in the Joint Entrance Examination or JEE (Main) from the State, has been selected to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The scores for JEE Main 2015 for entry into renowned technical institutes were declared on Monday.

 A number of students from the city scored exceptionally well in the exam.
The scores in the JEE (Main), besides deciding the entry to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and other central institutions, is also a qualifying criteria to appear for the JEE (Advanced), that decides entry into the prestigious IITs.

This year the cut-off to appear for the JEE (Advanced) has been lowered to 105 marks from last year’s 115. The top 1.5 lakh students in JEE (Main) will write the JEE (Advanced) to be held in May 24.

Arindam, a student of FIITJEE, Bengaluru centre, secured a score of 311, out of 360. He has excelled in a number of academic endeavours right from his school days securing a gold medal at the International Junior Astronomy Oly- mpiad, 2012  held in Korea, won bronze medal at the same competition in the senior category that was held in Greece in 2013.
 He was the all-India topper in the National Talent Search Exam, 2012.

“I got selected to MIT around March. Although I want to pursue electrical engineering at MIT, there is a provision of a dual degree. I would also like to pursue physics,” he said.
Originally from Nagpur, Arindam came to Bengaluru four years ago to follow his goal of cracking the JEE. Although JEE would be of no use to him if he does finally go to MIT, Arindam says, “I have been preparing for the JEEs for the past four years and it would be wrong to say that the effort was altogether futile. I will be giving the JEE (Advanced) and among the IITs, I would like to go to IIT, Bombay,” he said.
Arindam would ultimately like to pursue research, instead of working in the industry.

“I want a firm grounding in electrical engineering and am also interested in theoretical physics,” he said.

Devansh Sharma, another student from the city, got a score of 305 out of 360. He is a student of Deeksha Network. Shishir G from Viveka PU College, Udupi, secured 295 marks out of 360.
