New Delhi, Sept 25, 2016: Months after the Ministry of Home Affairs conducted an internal enquiry into the missing files related to Ishrat Jahan encounter case, a formal police investigation has been launched into the matter.

The home ministry has filed an FIR with Delhi Police to formally probe how, why and under what circumstances crucial files went missing.

The probe is set to escalate the fight between BJP and Congress in the matter as several bureaucrats who served in the home ministry during UPA-2 may be questioned by the cops.

In its FIR filed at Parliament Police station, home ministry has listed five documents have been missing from the North Block, including the Ishrat affidavit, amended by former home minister P Chidambaram.

The FIR has been registered under section 409 of IPC, which deals with criminal breach of trust by public servant, against unknown public servants. Officials say that the documents have been deliberately removed/taken away from MHA and police probe will establish that.

The MHA complaint says "why, how and under what circumstances Ishrat papers went missing is a matter of police investigation".

Earlier, an internal probe was conducted by former additional secretary of foreigners division in MHA in May and a report was submitted to Rajnath Singh.
