Lucknow, Sep 30, 2020: Uttar Pradesh is a hotbed for crime against women with stories of rape, molestation, and murder surfacing every day. Now in yet another shocker, 52 teachers at a private school in Meerut have alleged that they were filmed inside toilets. Their trauma did not end there. The school management later used the footage for blackmailing teachers into working without a salary for months.
The torture the teachers underwent came to light after they approached the police. The women complained that each time they demanded their salaries, the secretary of the school’s management committee threatened them with compromising footage captured on CCTV.
On Wednesday, an FIR was registered against the secretary and his son for alleged sexual harassment, reported The Times of India. They were booked for sexual assault, voyeurism, and intentional insult. The secretary’s son has now been arrested.
However, the secretary has denied the allegations, saying that there were no cameras in the women’s toilet but they have been installed inside the men’s loo. “This was done against the backdrop of the recent cases of murders inside schools,” he explained. He also confessed that the school has been unable to pay its teachers because of the pandemic.
But this is Uttar Pradesh we are talking about, one of the most unsafe states for women in the country. The incident has caused an outrage with women pointing out that even bathrooms can’t be considered a safe space.
This is not the first time that the Meerut school has hit headlines. In 2017, it asked students to get a haircut like Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
Meanwhile, the CM, conscious of the rising atrocities against women, has decided to name and shame sexual offenders. Sometimes, it really feels like we are stuck in the middle ages.
