IS recruit from Kalyan fabricating false stories? NIA seeks lie detection test

New Delhi, Nov 30: The National Investigation Agency may conduct narco and lie detection tests on 23-year-old Kalyan youth who had left India to allegedly join the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). 

Lie detection test on Majeed means the NIA, which is quizzing the 23-year-old, is smelling something fishy about the account narrated by the Kalyan youth who returned last week to get himself treated after he was reportedly injured by a gunshot while fighting for the ISIS.

The “highly radicalised” civil engineering student from Maharashtra’s Kalyan, who had left India six months ago on May 23 along with 22 pilgrims to visit holy places in Iraq, actually went on to join the ISIS ranks in Iraq’s Mosul and returned to India on Friday morning.

 

Just hours after landing in India, Majeed was arrested and is now under the NIA (National Investigating Agency) custody till December 8, where he is being interrogated.

More details are emerging about the youth as NIA officials continue to grill him about the various aspects of how he was indoctrinated and what happened in Iraq.

Majeed has told the NIA officials that he was indoctrinated online and that he was able to reach Mosul in Iraq with the help of a contact whose phone number he was provided on the internet.

Majeed had reportedly married in July to a Palestinian girl named Tahira. The fact about his marriage, that took place in July, had come to light via his purported Facebook profile, reports said.

According to reports, Majeed has told the quizzing officials that he had to return to India after he was injured while fighting for the ISIS and that he did not receive a proper treatment there.

However, the NIA officials are reportedly treading with caution and are too meticulous to easily believe the account provided by the returned ISIS youth, fearing that there may be a dangerous motive lurking beneath his simple account of returning to India.

Authorities have registered a case against the ISIS and its operatives under Sec.125 of the IPC which deals with waging war against any Asiatic country having friendly ties with India, which has a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

Majeed along with three other youths namely - Shaheen Tanki, Fahad Shaikh and Aman Tandel - left Mumbai in May with other pilgrims on the pretext of visiting holy places in Iraq, but they joined the ISIS there.

Reports in August claimed that Arif had been killed while fighting along side the ISIS in Iraq.
