Hyderabad, Delhi, Gurugram locked down by pounding rain

New Delhi, Aug 31, 2016:  Delhi went dark on Wednesday morning as it began to rain heavily, flooding roads and slowing down traffic in rush hour.

Heavy rain also pounded Gurugram and Hyderabad, where officials issued warnings to people.

The police in Gurugram, the business hub adjacent to Delhi, issued advisories early as the rain came pouring down, asking people to be patient and navigate roads with discipline.

"Heavy rains in Gurgaon, please be advised. Be patient and maintain lane discipline, we are on the job to facilitate your movement," the Gurgaon police tweet read.

In Hyderabad, the civic body chief asked people not to go out for at least an hour.

Angry office goers tweeted about being stuck in the massive traffic jams that have become synonymous with rain in the capital.

Heavy rain in Hyderabad this morning
In Hyderabad, the civic body chief asked people not to go out for at least an hour.

There are reports of major chaos on the roads of the city, which grappled with 12-hour-long jams last month after persistent showers.

The Delhi police tweeted about the waterlogged areas in Delhi:


On Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry was among those stuck in traffic when pouring rain and flooded roads slowed down cars driving to the capital.

Many people travel between Delhi and Gurugram for work and there are fears of a repeat of  last month’s flooding on the National Highway-8 that left thousands of commuters stranded.

"Rain or no rain... Delhi to Gurugram roads are always jammed," Priyanka Thakkar tweeted.

Many companies in Gurugram have reportedly asked their employees to work from home as the Millennium city crawled on Wednesday morning.
