Heavy rains lash Tamil Nadu, 55 killed in 5 days, train, flight services hit

Chennai, Nov 14, 2015: Nearly 55 people have been killed is separate incidents across the state as heavy rains continue to pound Tamil Nadu disrupting rail, road and air traffic in the region.

According to latest inputs seven more death were reported in rain-related incidents as the North East monsoon continue to batter the batter the state. Schools and colleges in the capital city Chennai remained shut on Friday with various areas witnessing severe waterlogging due to incessant rain. Educational institution also remained closed in other districts Vellore, Thiruvallur and Kanchipuram. In Chennai, office goers had a harrowing time as they had to wade through knee-deep and in some places waist-deep waters. Power and telecommunication services have also been hit in some parts of the city. Schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu remain shut due to heavy rains 

Trains leaving Chennai were also affected due to water logging in the tracks. Arterial roads including in Anna Salai, Poonamallee High Road and GST Road in the city came under sheets of water hitting vehicular movement.

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has condoled the death of the victims, a majority of whom drowned in flood waters, and announced Rs four lakh each to their families of those killed from the Disaster Relief Fund, PTI reported.

The deep depression, which was centered in Bay of Bengal, had already crossed the Chennai coast on November 9. However, the weathear department said a new low presure area has formed over South Andaman Sea was expected to bring heavy rains across the region in the next few days.
