Former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi passes away

Guwahati, Nov 23, 2020:     Veteran Congress leader and former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi passed away on Monday in Guwahati where he had been receiving treatment for post-COVID complications, according to several media reports. The veteran Congress leader was 84.

 

Earlier today, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had flown from Dibrugarh to Guwahati to meet former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi whose health condition started deteriorating on Monday.

Taking to Twitter, Sonowal said, "I am flying back to Guwahati from Dibrugarh after cancelling my programs midway to be on side of respected Tarun Gogoi da and his family as the former CM’s health deteriorates. He has always been a father figure to me. I join millions in praying for his recovery."

Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was at GMCH along with Gogoi’s son and Congress MP Gaurav, said Gogoi’s organs had failed with the brain receiving some signals, eyes showing some reflexes and his heart functioning with the help of a pace-maker, However, no other organs are functioning, he had said.

The former Chief Minister had tested positive for COVID-19 in August.

Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that Gogoi is in a very critical condition.

Gogoi was given dialysis on Sunday. His condition deteriorated further over the past few hours and it was stated to be ’very very critical’.

Gogoi was the MLA from the Titabor assembly constituency since 2001. He was also a six-time parliamentarian and a Union minister twice.

Gogoi was undergoing treatment at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
