Drones spotted again near military camps in Jammu, security forces on alert

Jammu, Jun 30, 2021: Security personnel spotted drones at three separate places in Jammu for the fourth consecutive day on Wednesday.

 

Sources told India Today that drones were seen hovering over Miran Sahib, Kaluchak and Kunjwani areas of Jammu in the wee hours of Wednesday.

“Today, from around 4.40 am, one unidentified flying object/drone was seen hovering over Kaluchak. At 4.52 am, another flying object/drone was seen near the Air Force station signal in Kunjwani area of Jammu,” sources told India Today.

The drone activity was witnessed near defence installations, sources added.

In the last four days, at least seven drones have been spotted in Jammu in and around military camps.

The Indian Air Force station in Jammu had come under attack on Sunday (June 27) when two bombs were dropped by two drones -- the first time Pakistan-based terrorists employed drones to strike vital installations.

The aerial distance from the Jammu airport to the international border is 14 km. Jammu airport is a civil airport with the runway and the ATC (air traffic control) under the IAF.

A day later, the Indian Army said troops fired at two drones which were spotted over Kaluchak military camp.

"Two quadkopters were spotted on a stretch of the Kaluchak-Purmandal road on the Jammu Pathankot national highway. The suspected objects were flying near the Kalucheck military station," police told India Today. "Both the drones flew away. A major threat was thwarted by the alertness and proactive approach of troops," an official said on Monday.

In the third instance, a drone was spotted at three different locations, including the Sunjwan military camp, in Jammu on Tuesday.

What is probe status?

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday took over the charge of the investigation into the drone attack on the Indian Air Force station located at the Jammu airport.

The decision to hand over the probe into the first-of-its-kind terror attack at the Indian Air Force station in the early hours of Sunday was taken by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In pursuance of the Home Ministry order, the NIA re-registered the case of Police Station Satwari dated June 27.

An agency spokesperson said the case relates to an explosion that occurred inside the premises of the Air Force Station, Satwari campus, Jammu and a subsequent blast, after about six minutes, carried out by drones in a well-planned conspiracy that led to the injury to two Air Force personnel and damaged the office buildings.

"While the NIA has been working with other agencies since immediately after the incident, pursuant to the re-registration of the case, requisite actions as per law, for expeditious investigation of case have been initiated," the spokesperson said.Meanwhile, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the Indo-Nepal border seized eight China-made drones from a car in East Champaran district.
