Delhi Cops to be Blamed for Man’s Mystery Death, Says Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi Sep 11, 2015:  The death of a man moments after a run-in with the police in Delhi has been seized by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has repeatedly demanded the control of the city’s police.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia today told Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung that the police acted questionably and action should be taken against them.

A video clip purportedly of the incident on Monday shows the man, Shahnawaz Chaudhary, lying on the road and shouting that he was beaten up. His wife Mamata is also seen screaming and being restrained by a policewoman. She has alleged that Shahnawaz was tortured.

Shahnawaz died shortly after he intervened in a roadside fight between a man and his wife. The 35-year-old was on a bike with his own wife when he stopped at spotting the squabbling couple.

The woman, Farha, had called the police, accusing her husband of domestic violence.

The police allege that Shahnawaz was drunk and attempted to pull Farha out of their van. When the police tried to stop him, there was a struggle.

Another police emergency response vehicle arrived and Shahnawaz and his wife were ordered to get into it.

The police claim that on the way to a police station, Shahnawaz started complaining of nausea and discomfort. By the time he was taken to hospital, he was dead, they claimed.

The Delhi government may ask for a murder case against the police after an inquiry ordered by it said that the death was unnatural and the police were accountable. The inquiry said the man could have suffocated in the van.

"We thought police would take up the case and act promptly. Instead, there is a cover-up and an attempt to shield the policemen," said AAP’s Ashutosh.
