The deceased was later identified as Jaideep Swain, a student of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Powai.

Swain was pursuing his Masters in technology (MTech) at the computer science department of IIT, and had joined the institute in July this year.

His father works as a porter in the Food Corporation of India and his sister is in Chennai.

According to the police, Swain checked in to the hotel in Jogeshwari on August 31. His last contact with the hotel staff was on September 1.

“On September 3, when a staff member was on the seventh floor of the hotel, he could smell an unusual odour from Swain’s room. He then informed his superiors and the police were called,” said an officer from Amboli police station. The police received the call at 11.30am.

When Swain did not open the door, the police forced their way in and found Swain’s body on the bed in a decomposed condition.

Anti-depressant tablets were found near the body and a medical report has been ordered to determine if Swain had overdosed. No suicide letter has been found.

“Till now, we have not found any foul play in the death. We are investigating the case further and also trying to find out why the boy had come to the hotel,” said the police officer.
