The newspaper had published a byline copy of Avadhesh Chouhan from Jammu that claimed that the eight-year-old Kathua rape victim was not raped. This story, based on two post-mortem reports, claimed that “In a shocking revelation, neither of the two reports mentions that the victim was raped”.

However, when BOOM tried to access the story online through a Google search, we found that the story has been deleted from the website.

The story with the headline “Kathua case reveals that the girl was not raped” takes us to an unrelated story.

BOOM spoke to Kamlesh Raghuvanshi, editor of Jagran.com, who admitted that the story has been taken down as they wanted to run more checks on the details in the story.

Raghuvanshi said the story can be read in the paper but has been taken down temporarily till some more information was cross-checked. Raghuvanshi refused to clarify which part of the story was in doubt to the editorial team.

Jagran will have to explain to its readers why it chose to quietly delete a story of this sensitivity and importance without informing its readers on the reasons for it. Especially since the print version of the story is now viral on WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter and is being used to discredit the present investigation team.

Dainik Jagran’s story on Friday morning disputing rape on the victim came as a huge cause of vindication for several right-wing handles on Twitter. They called this as a victory of their stance that rape was added in the chargesheet to defame the Hindu community in Jammu.

Interestingly, Avadhesh Chouhan had written another story on 15 April.

In that story, he had written that the accused cops had washed the victim’s clothes, which were covered in dirt and blood, before sending it to Jammu Forensic Lab, in a bid to destroy the evidence.

He further stated that SPO Deepak Khajuria had confessed to the crime branch that he had seen Tilak Raj, head constable at Hiranagar police station wash the victim’s clothes. The forensic lab also said in its report that the washing of the clothes had resulted in the removal of the dirt and blood stains.
