Covid surge in South: Strict 33-hour lockdown in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 04,2020: Once winning the fight against the novel coronavirus, several cities in Southern India are now going into a strict lockdown to cut the chain of Covid-19 transmission.

Karnataka’s Bengaluru, the city which was once being hailed for its Covid control programme, will now go under a 33-hour-long strict lockdown "with no exceptions" starting 8 pm on Saturday.

Bengaluru City Commissioner of Police Bhaskar Rao has said that the lockdown will start at 8 on Saturday and will conclude at 5 am on Monday.

He has also requested the citizens to stay at home and not ask for exceptions, saying the strict lockdown is being imposed for everybody’s interest.

"Lockdown starts at 8 pm and concludes at 5 am, Monday in Bangalore city. Respected Citizens, just stay home and don’t ask for exceptions as this is being done in everybody’s interest, heavens won’t fall if you postpone by a day. Please exercise self-discipline and cooperate. Happy Sunday," Bhaskar Rao said in a tweet.

Over the last week, Karnataka has registered an unusual spike in Covid-19 cases. The state now has more than 18,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19. Between June 28 and July 2, it recorded over 1,000 new cases almost every day.

Karnataka’s cases are heavily concentrated in the capital city Bengaluru. On July 2, Bengaluru reported almost 900 new cases, the seventh highest for any Indian city.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has extended the complete lockdown in Madurai for a week from July 6 to July 12 in Madurai corporation limits.

On the other hand, in Chennai, hotels have been allowed to operate between 6 am and 9 pm for takeaways only from July 6. Home delivery of food ordered over the phone will be allowed till 9 pm. The hotel delivery person will have to carry a valid id card issued by the organisation.

Grocery and vegetable shops in Chennai have been allowed to operate between 6 am to 6 pm.

Except for those in shopping malls, all other shops have been allowed to operate between 10 am to 6 pm in Chennai with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
