Col Purohit comes out of jail after nine years

RAIGAD/MUMBAI: Aug 23 2017, DH News: Nine years after being in jail, Lt Col Prasad Shrikant Purohit, a Military Intelligence official arrested for his role in the 2008 blasts in the powerloom town of Malegaon, came out of prison on Wednesday after being granted bail by the Supreme Court.

Col Purohit, who was commissioned to the Maratha Light Infantry and had taken part in counter-insurgency operations, was later assigned to the MI field unit.

On Monday, the Supreme Court had granted him bail, while on Tuesday, the bail formalities was completed at the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court located inside the Mumbai Session Court.

With Indian Army vehicles escorting him, the suspended Indian Army officer, came out of the high-security Taloja prison complex in Raigad district, at around 10.45 AM.

A resident of Prabhat Road in Pune, Lt Col Purohit would now be attached to one of the units of Southern Command even as the Army headquarters would be subsequently taking a call on his suspension.

During the course of the nine years in jail, his wife Aparna Purohit and his two sons, aged 18 and 12, stood by him like a rock. After his release, he is expected to be taken to an Army unit at Colaba where formalities would be done and he would subsequently leave for his residence in Pune.
