Cardinal Ranjith to be Papal Envoy - Mumbai Eucharistic Congress 2015

Vatican, Sep 16, 2015: Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith of Colombo, as his Special Envoy to the National Eucharistic Congress scheduled November 12-15 in Mumbai, which will mark the 50th anniversary of the International Eucharistic Congress held in India.

The National Eucharistic Congress is expected to attract thousands of people from all over the Country. All the four Cardinals of India, all the Bishops of Indian Hierarchy, representatives of Priests, Religious, Lay people and Youth from all the 170 Dioceses are expected to participate in this four-day event.

The aims at deepening the understanding, appreciation and love of the Eucharist, which the Catholics believe to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

The main theme intense prayer and reflection during the days will be ‘Nourished by Christ to Nourish Others’, which will underscore the intimate relationship between the faithful and the Eucharistic Lord,

Cardinal Ranjith was appointed Official in the Congregation for Evangelization of Peoples. In 2004 He was then appointed as Apostolic Nuncio in Indonesia and Timor-Leste on 29th April, 2004, with Umbriatico as the Titular See.

On 10th December, 2005, he was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. He was appointed as Archbishop of Colombo on 16th June, 2009.
