Bandh effective across state, Bengaluru Metro shut down

Mangalore Today News Network

Bengaluru, July 30, 2016, DHNS: Normal life is likely to be affected in Bengaluru on Saturday in view of a bandh called by pro-Kannada and farmer organisations protesting the Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal’s interim order.

Early reports said bandh had been effective across the state except for Dakshina Kannada, Mandya, Ramnagara, Coorg and Raichur. In other districts, the response to bandh ranged from full to partial, said reports.

Protesters made an impact on the state capital, Bengaluru. The Bengaluru Metro suspended service after Kannada activists protested at Nayandahalli station, say reports.   Another team of Kannada activists reportedly visited Vijayanagara station and requested officials to not run the service.

Protesters also gathered in front of Kempe Gowda International Airport and the Bengaluru Railway Station at Majestic. A Chennai bound train at 6.15 am was reportedly stalled.

BMTC and KSRTC officials had said on Friday that the bus services would not be affected. But on Saturday there was hardly any state transport bus on the road.

Except for a few private vehicles and stray auto or taxi traffic was thin on the road. Most shops and other establishments have shut down.
