Attack on Kashmiri students: 2 youths arrested, CM ensures safety in Rajasthan

Jaipur, Apr 21, 2017 : Police on Friday arrested two local youth for their alleged involvement in the attack on eight Kashmiri students which took place on Wednesday night near theGangralvillage market in Chittorgarh district in Rajasthan.

The arrested individuals were identified as Lalit alias Sohit (23) and Manish alias Chintoo (29). Police have lodged a FIR against the duo under IPC section 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 341 (Punishment for wrongful restraint) and say that they are on the lookout for others involved in the incident.

"We have arrested two persons on the basis of the witness and identification done by local shopkeepers who were present when the incident took place. We are still investigating the case and looking for more people who were allegedly in beating up Kashmiri boys," Dinesh Sukhwal, Station House Officer atGangralPolice station explained.


The eight Kashmiri youth, studying at Mewar University in Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan were attacked without provocation on Wednesday night by locals who reportedly used bats and wickets to assult them while they were on their way topurchase fruits and groceries.

The victim testimony later revealed that they were supposedly attacked in response to the recent heckling of police personnel during recent parliamentarian elections in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The students, all of whom are hostellers, belong to Kupwara, Baramulla and Anantnag districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Following the incident, the students also staged a demonstration on Thursday to urge authorities to hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions.



Chief Minister of Rajasthan Vasundhara Raje also tried to reach out to the students through her twitter handle and assured safety to be given by the state government.


Raje’s tweet came hours after Home Minister Rajnath Singh in a statement appealed to all states to ensure the safety of Kashmiris. After Kashmiri students were attacked in Rajasthan, Ministry of Home Affairs also released a 24X7 helpline number for Kashmiris living outside Jammu and Kashmir.

The incident has also put the local administration on its toes as it is the third incident in one year when Kashmiri youth from the same Mewar University have faced assault. One such incident took place in May 2016 when four Kashmiri students were beaten up over rumours of them cooking beef. In another similar incident, nine students from Jammu and Kashmir and a warden of Mewar University were arrested in April 2016 following clashes over India’s defeat in T20.
