7-year-old girl dies while ’imitating’ suicide scene from TV serial

Meerut, Jun 09, 2018 : A seven-year-old girl from Kolkata died after she allegedly tried to imitate a suicide scene that was being telecast on a TV serial.

 

At the time of the tragic incident, the girl and her two-month-old brother were all by themselves in the house.

Her mother had gone out to deposit money in a nearby post office and had reportedly asked a neighbour to look after her children. Her father, who is a mason, too was out for work.

The Times of India in a report said the victim was a resident of Ichhapore are of the city. The matter came to light when the girl’s mother returned home and found her daughter hanging by a scarf from the roof. She was rushed to a hospital but was declared brought dead.

The report said the police suspect that the victim died due to suffocation but are waiting for the autopsy report.

"It appears that she tried to mimic a scene from a TV serial that she was watching. Somehow, the scarf she was playing with got firmly wrapped around her neck," said a senior police officer at the Barrackpore Commissionerate, Times of India said in its report.

Quoting a relative of the deceased, the report said that the girl would often imitate scenes telecast on TV.

"But we never thought her interest will result in such tragic end," the relative told the newspaper.

This is however not the first time that such a case has come to light. In November 2017, a seven-old-girl died after she set herself on fire after seeing a similar scene in a TV serial. More recently, an eight-year-old girl hanged herself in Meerut after seeing a popular crime show on TV.
