3 dead as suicide bomber blows himself up in Medina mosque

Saudi Arabia  July 05, 2016 : There have been three explosions in Saudi Arabia in less than 24 hours. Early today morning, two security forces were injured as a suicide bomber blew himself near the US Consulate in Jeddah.

At least three people were killed in the blast outside the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina in Saudi Arabia on Monday, including a suicide bomber and two security officers, Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television reported.


The bomber detonated his device as the security officers were breaking their day-long fast for Ramadan, Arabiya reported.


Two explosions struck near a mosque in the city of Qatif and Medina in Saudi Arabia on the last day of Ramadan month.

EXPLOSION IN MEDINA


In Medina a suicide bomber detonated a device near the security headquarters of the Prophet’s Mosque,  the second-holiest site in Islam, Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television reported on Monday.


The blasts in the two cities followed the one Jeddah on Monday, the last day of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan and start of the Eid al-Fitra festival. Pictures circulating on social media showed dark smoke billowing from flames near the mosque.


EXPLOSION IN QATIF


In Qatif, one explosion destroyed a car parked near a mosque, followed by another explosion just before 7 p.m. local time. Body parts could be seen and they are believed to be that of an attacker, the witness added.


Photographs purporting to be of the incident published on Twitter showed a severed leg and crowds gathered outside a mosque at dusk. Some posts said the explosion was caused by a suicide attacker setting off a bomb.


Reuters could not immediately verify the images or confirm the information. The incident happened just hours after a suicide bomber was killed and two people were wounded in a blast near the U.S. consulate in the kingdom’s second city of Jeddah on Monday.


It was the first bombing in years to attempt to target foreigners in the kingdom. There was no immedaite claim of responsibility for the Jeddah attack.
