Manipuri is located over 200 kilometres from state capital Lucknow and 100 kms from Agra. Local administration says the situation is under control now. The Deputy Superintendent of Police of the area has been suspended.

"21 people have been arrested. The situation is under control now," District Magistrate Chandrapal Singh said. Senior police officials are camping in the area and security has been increased.

According to police, the violence happened after rumours that a cow, which was grazing in a field near Nagaria village in Mainpuri, was whisked away for slaughter by four men. As rumours spread, their house was attacked by the mob.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate Vijay Pratap said it would be known only after post mortem if a cow was slaughtered as was being alleged by some persons.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Yadav said attempts were being made to vitiate atmosphere in Mainpuri.

"Today, attempts are being made in Karhal (Mainpuri) to vitiate communal atmosphere. We are ensuring arrest of those involved in the incident," he said.
