16 killed after another bomb blast hits Shia gathering in Pakistan

Mangalore Today

Afghanistan 24 Oct, 2015 : At least 16 people were killed and more than 40 injured after a bomb blast hit a Shiite Muslim procession in Pakistan’s Sindh province on Friday. This was the second blast that took place during the Ashura festivities in two days and came after a radical Sunni Muslim group threatened continuous violence during the holiday.

Yesterday, at least 10 people, including 6 children, were killed after a suicide bomber attacked a Shiite mosque in southwest Pakistan’s Sibi district.

"It was a suicide attack as the head and some other body parts of the suicide bomber were found at the site," another Pakistani journalist in Jacobabad, Ghani Baksh, quoted police official Zafar Iqbal Awan as saying.

Ashoura is a 10-day ritual during which the Shiites commemorate the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammad. Pakistan had stepped in security for the event where the minority Shiites hold public rallies after receiving threats from the Sunni extremists who consider them to be heretics.

Pakistan has been waging a military offensive against terror group Al Qaeda and other militants in the North Waziristan province bordering Afghanistan since June 2014.
