16 die in first bout of rains in Maharashtra

Maharastra, June 10, 2017 : At least 16 persons were killed as overnight rains lashed parts of Maharashtra as the south-west monsoon progressed into the western coastal state on Saturday.

 

The Mumbai suburbs spread across three districts of Thane, Raigad and Palghar received heavy overnight rains which was accompanied by lightning and winds. However, there was no incident of rail or road disruption.

Four people were killed and another eight injured in Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha region, three died in Nanded and two in Latur in Marathwada region and one in Nashik in Khandesh region when they were struck by lightning in since the intervening night of Friday-Saturday.

A minor boy, Akshay Ashok Gawli, aged around 10 was washed away while going to school while trying to cross a small bridge over a heavily flooded drain Nevasa in Ahmednagar district.

An IT engineer, Yogesh Kurle, was electrocuted when he accidentally touched a live wire hanging near Murbad in Thane district, while another person was seriously injured.

In Bhiwandi in Thane district, part of a building and compound wall caved in. However, there were no casualties.

According to IMD’s Mumbai-based Regional Meteorological Centre, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the coastal Konkan belt in the next 24 hours.

Wind will be south westerly speed 45-50 kmph temporarily/momentarily reaching 60 kmph in gusts/squall. Sea will be rough to very rough with southwesterly waves. Fishermen are advised not to go out in the sea during next 24 hours, the RMC-IMD said.

According to Skymet Weather, rains have taken vigorous turn along the west coast. In fact, last 24 hours saw very heavy to extremely rainfall over parts of Coastal Karnataka and Konkan & Goa. Few areas have also record three-digit rainfall as well. Harnai recorded 320 mm of rain ins pan of 24 hours from 8:30 am on Friday. This was followed by Honavar that received 151 mm and Ratnagiri 133 mm.
