13 killed in Kinnaur road accident

Shimla, May 21, 2016: 13 people were killed on Friday night when the utility vehicle in which they were travelling rolled down a 100-ft gorge in Himachal’s Kinnaur, around 220 km.

 

One person has been injured in the mishap killed.There were part of a marriage party.

How it happened

14 people boarded a utility vehicle while coming back from a marriage in Kathgaon. On their way to Barakhamba, the vehicle rolled down a 1000-ft gorge around 10pm.

Locals informed the police about the incident and along with rescue team, district administration reached on the spot around 11:30.

“Five bodies were on the road besides one injured,” sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Surender Mohan said.

He said the vehicle -HP26 A 1197 - was on its way to Barakhamba. 10 km before the destination, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it skidded off the road down a deep gorge. 12 people died on the spot while one succumbed to the injuries on way to the Rampur hospital.

Sources said the driver was under the influence of liquor.

Around 2am, Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was called for the rescue and retrieval operation. “The ITBP team arrived at 2am and search operation lasted till the morning,” Mohan added.

All the bodies have been retrieved.

The deceased have been identified as Shravan Kumar, Ravinder Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar, Pavan Kumar, Deepak, Shravan, Yogesh, Durga Singh, Rajender Kumar, Mukesh Kumar (driver), Arvind Kumar and Abhishek and Hari Krishan.

Police have registered case under Section 304, 279 A of the Indian Penal Code. Local administration has disbursed Rs 10,000 to kin of each deceased and Rs 5,000 to the injured as immediate relief.
