The reopening comes amid tensions over Supreme Court’s verdict allowing the entry of women of menstruating age to enter the Lord Ayyappa temple in Kerala.

The reopening comes a day after leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress party walked out of the all-party meet to discuss concerns over the Supreme Court verdict.

Following the meeting, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that although he respects religious sentiments, his government is bound to implement the top court’s order.

Social activist Trupti Desai, who had written to CM Vijayan seeking security for visiting the temple on 17 November, was blocked by protesters at the Kochi airport on the morning of 16 November.

SC, on 13 Nov, refused to stay its 28 September verdict and fixed 22 January to hear all the review petitions.

On 28 September, in a 4:1 verdict, the Supreme Court had granted entry to women of all age groups, allowing them to pay an obeisance to Lord Ayyappa.
