It is said that Jainism had its origins in Moodabidri in the 12th Century AD.  Under the patronage of the Vijayanagar Kings, it flourished in Moodabidri and its surrounding areas.  In the early 1400s Charukeerthi Bhattarakha, the head priest of Jain Mutt requested the Vijayanagar King for a piece of land to build a temple.  The King granted the land and in 1430 the famous 1000 Pillar Jain Temple was built with the help of wealthy merchants and the local community.  The 1000 Pillar Jain Temple is the most magnificent of the 18 Jain Temples in Moodabidri.  It is dedicated to Chandranatha, the 8th Theertankara of Jains and is an uncrowned world heritage site in the outskirts of Mangalore.

Moodabidri or Bedra is a small town 37 kms. northeast of Dakshina Kannada District is also called Jain Kashi.  Because of widely grown bamboo in ancient days, this place got named Moodabidri derived from two words ’Moodu and Bidiru’ (East & Bamboo) though earlier it was known as Mooduvenupura.  There are 18 lakes, 18 Jain Basadis, 18 Temples and 18 roads connecting various villages in Moodabidri.

Though Jain community members have been working here in UAE for quite long, this is the first time they are all eagerly enthusiastic to get together in this union with the blessings of His Holiness Swasti Shri. Charukeerthi Bhattarakha Swamiji who will arrive all the way from Shri. Jain Mutt, Moodabidri.
