The semi-final clash at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre was a test of character and resilience. After dropping the opening game 10-21, Shetty staged a spirited comeback, clinching the next two games 21-19, 21-17 in a thrilling contest that lasted over an hour. Displaying remarkable composure, sharp tactical awareness, and an aggressive net game, the young Indian outplayed one of the sport’s biggest names, earning a well-deserved place in the final.

Ranked 25th in the world, Shetty’s run in the tournament has been nothing short of extraordinary. His earlier victory over World No. 4 Jonathan Christie in the quarter-finals further underlined his growing stature on the global stage. With this achievement, he became the first Indian men’s singles player since HS Prannoy in 2018 to reach the podium at the continental meet, rekindling hopes of a strong Indian presence in men’s singles badminton.

Roots of a Champion
Shetty’s journey began far from the bright lights of international arenas, in the quiet town of Sanoor near Karkala in Udupi district. Introduced to badminton at the age of eight by his father, his early training took place in a modest backyard setting. Recognising his potential, his family made the crucial decision to move to Bengaluru, where better facilities and coaching opportunities awaited.

At the renowned Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy, Shetty’s talent was carefully nurtured. Rigorous training helped him sharpen his reflexes, improve court coverage, and develop an attacking style that has now become his hallmark.

A Rapid Climb
The past year has been transformative for the young shuttler. His breakthrough moment came with a title-winning performance at the US Open, where he defeated Brian Yang in straight games, becoming the first Indian to clinch a BWF World Tour title in 2025. His victories over top players such as Li Shi Feng and Chin Yu Jen have further established him as a rising force capable of challenging the best.

Even during his junior years, Shetty showed glimpses of his immense potential. A bronze medal at the 2023 World Junior Championships in Spokane, titles at international junior events, and strong finishes in senior tournaments painted the picture of a player destined for greater heights.

The Road Ahead
What sets Ayush Shetty apart is not just his powerful offensive play and precise shot-making, but also his calm demeanour under pressure. In high-stakes matches, where nerves often dictate outcomes, his maturity has stood out.

As India searches for its next global badminton icon, Shetty’s journey—from a backyard court in Sanoor to defeating world champions—offers a compelling narrative of talent, perseverance, and ambition. More than just victories, he is building belief—both in himself and among fans who now see in him the promise of a future champion.

With his fearless approach and steady rise, Ayush Shetty is not merely competing; he is redefining expectations, signalling that Indian badminton’s next big star has truly arrived.
