Mangalore Today News Network

Dharwad, Jan 6: According to official police sources, 3 policemen have been suspended from duties for handcuffing 7 farmers while escorting them to the hospital for medical treatment.

Around 72 farmers who had staged a protest against land acquisition for a housing project and against the re-launching of the Bhadra Cooperative Sugar Factory in Davanagere were imprisoned in the Dharward Central Jail ever since Dec 26. These farmers decided to go on an indefinite fast from Jan 2 in order to intensify their protests. On Monday, the condition of 7 farmers worsened.

The farmers have vehemently protested the fact that the 3 District Armed Reserve (DAR) constables who escorted the sick farmers to the hospital had handcuffed them.

D Prakash, the superintendent of Dharward District Police, said that he has suspended a head constable and 2 constables on grounds of violating the Police Act.
