Youth exhorted to take part as city traffic wardens

Mangaluru, July 28,2016: Presiding over a felicitation programme organised by the City Traffic Warden Squad and the City Police Commissioner at his office here on July 27,Wednesday to felicitate the traffic wardens rendering significant service, he said there might be some instances where people might hesitate to admit the accident victims to hospital fearing police procedures.  City Police Commissioner M Chandra Sekhar said people, who help accident victims, need not have to be the part of police procedures.

 

 

As per court order, the person who admits the victim to hospital, could sign as a witness, only if he opts. "There is no mandatory procedure, which forces the helper to make him a part of police and court procedures. The commissioner will take steps to create awareness towards enlightening general public in this regard," he stated.

Lauding the efforts by traffic wardens, the police commissioner said they have been carrying out the selfless duty of controlling the traffic density, even in harsh weather conditions.

Traffic Warden Squad Chief Traffic Warden Joe Gonsalves said though the traffic wardens have made some progress, a lot needs to be done for expanding the squad and providing a better service. A 30-member team was formed in 2015 following an initiative by the then commissioner of police S Murugan. The objective of introducing the concept of traffic wardens is not to victimise the traffic offenders, but to reduce road accidents, he added.

He called upon people to be the traffic wardens and help the traffic police in controlling the increasing traffic. Entrepreneur Micheal D’Souza, who was the guest of honour, said that the problems of irresponsible driving and bad roads need to be addressed to solve the problem of traffic congestion.

Traffic wardens Francis Maxim Moras, J Muhammed and Mohan were felicitated for their valuable services.

Former professor of Criminology Dr Ashok regretted that the overall road condition has not improved. Most of the people, serving as traffic officers, are senior citizens.  He called upon youth to be traffic wardens. The support of youth associations could be sought in this regard, he said.

Anti Pollution Drive NGO Head Arjun Rai and Journalist Violet Pereira also spoke. DCP (Crime) Sanjiv M Patil, DCP (Law and Order) K M Shantharaju, Traffic ACP Tilakchandra and ACP Uday Nayak were present.
