Youth Parliament empowers students to lead with purpose and vision: Capt Chowta

Mangaluru, July 11, 2025: The Young Indians (Yi) Mangaluru Chapter hosted an engaging and impactful Youth Parliament on Friday at the KCCI Chamber Hall, Bunder. The event brought together more than 100 students from grades 9 to 12, offering them a hands-on experience of parliamentary proceedings and an opportunity to explore key national issues through debate and discussion.

Structured to mirror the real workings of a democratic parliament, the Youth Parliament provided students with insights into governance, policymaking, and civic responsibilities. Participants formed committees to deliberate on pressing topics such as employment and entrepreneurship, health and well-being, climate change and sustainability, social justice and human rights, and youth and sports development. The exercise was aimed at cultivating leadership, collaboration, and analytical thinking among the students.

The day began with an address by Yi Mangaluru Chapter Chair CA Salome Lobo Pereira, who highlighted the vision of nurturing articulate, empathetic, and responsible future leaders. The event was marked by the presence of Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who inspired students to take initiative and be active agents of change. In his address, he emphasized the transformative power of youth leadership in shaping the nation’s future.

KCCI Vice President Mr. P.B. Ahmed Mudassar underscored the importance of civic engagement and encouraged students to remain informed and proactive in tackling societal challenges. Former Yi Mangaluru Chair and Regional Climate Change Mentor Ms. M. Athmika Amin delivered an informative session on environmental responsibility, focusing on the Miyawaki forest initiative and practical steps students can take toward sustainability.

A vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Durgadas Sshetty, who appreciated the efforts of the dignitaries, participants, educators, and sponsors in making the event a success.

Students from The Bharath Academy, Nalanda English Medium School, and PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya No.1 Mangaluru participated enthusiastically, showcasing their public speaking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. The event not only simulated democratic governance but also served as a platform to foster civic consciousness and leadership.

Event Chairs Ashish Rai and Shilpa Ghorpade ensured the smooth conduct of the day’s proceedings. Chapter Mentor Ashith B Hegde, Yi members Shohan J Shetty, Ashrika Amin, Aajeeth Kumar, Aditya Pai, and Past CII Chair Gaurav Hegde were also present. The event was compered by Yi member Mrs. Disha Prabhu.

With this initiative, Young Indians reaffirmed their dedication to cultivating a generation of informed, responsible, and socially committed leaders.
