Youth Congress to hold membership drive in city

Mangalore, Jan 13: Karnataka Pradesh Youth Congress Committee member B. K. Sandeep told reporters at a press conference held in the office of the district Congress on Jan 13, Thursday, that the Congress youth committee will start the youth Congress membership drive from the first week of February.

Revealing further details, he said that the membership drive will commence in Mangalore on Jan 15, adding that regional turning officers will visit various states to launch awareness campaigns. Campaigns have already been launched in 14 states, and campaigns will be launched in Karnataka on Jan 15 and in Maharashtra on Jan 17, he said.


He said that elections will be held for Youth Congress leadership in all municipalities, panchayats, and wards in Mangalore after the conclusion of the membership drive as part of a national drive undertaken to democratize the party’s youth wing. He also said that the election has been completed in Kerala and that five members from each of the 20,000 booths, has undertaken the awareness campaign.


During the previous year, Rahul Gandhi, the general secretary of the Congress, launched a similar membership drive, which won the Congress 300,000 members, and now, it has more than 14.5 lakh members, he said.


Ex MLA Krishna Bhaire Gowda, who is also the president of the state Youth Congress Committee, and Vishwa Ranjan Mohanty, will arrive at Mangalore on Jan 15 to participate in the membership drive and create awareness regarding free, neutral, and fair elections, he said. Those who wish to become members of the Youth Congress must be between 18 and 35 years of age and must provide proof of age and locality and a photograph. The voters’ list will be revealed after scrutiny, he said.


Stating that there are 1815 booths in Mangalore, he said that 10-member committees will be set up at the Panchayat, Assembly, and Parliament levels as well as in the corporation ward. The Youth Committee has reservations for women, SC/ST, and minorities in the election, he informed, adding that this drive is being held for the first time in Karnataka.


Youth Congress members such as Arun Coelho, Dikshit Gowda, Praveenchandra Alva, Namitha, Amruth Tantri, Mithun Rai, and others were present.
