Belagavi, March 16, 2020:  So much for social distancing. After placing restrictions on events involving large gatherings like weddings Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa himself turned up at a pretty big one in Belagavi on Sunday. Around 2,000 people were in attendance.

And he wasn’t the only BJP leader there, so were the state’s home minister, Basavaraj Bommai, and the MP from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Shobha Karandlaje, to name two.

The occasion was the wedding of BJP MLC Mahantesh Kavatgimath’s daughter. Sources say Yediyurappa initially cancelled plans to attend, but the lawmaker made an emotional plea: he said it was a prestige issue and requested the chief minister to come.

Yediyurappa arrived at the wedding venue at around 11.15 am on Sunday. He blessed the couple before heading to the dining area.

Meanwhile, the new Karnataka Congress president, DK Shivakumar, received a grand welcome at the party office today. Here, too, social distancing went for a toss. Keep in mind that Rahul Gandhi, the former Congress president, has repeatedly attacked the Centre over its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

On Friday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had placed restrictions on weddings, parties and sports tournaments as a precautionary measure, forcing many to defer or cancel planned events.

India has reported 110 cases so far, including two people who have died and 13 who’ve been discharged.

One of the fatalities was reported in Karnataka, which has six cases.
