Mangalore, January 14: Mangalore, Jan 14: Mayor Rajani Dugganna inaugurated the 5-day Students’ Yakshagana Sambrama 2011, organized by the Karnataka Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, Bangalore at Town Hall on Jan 14, Friday.
Dr. Chinnappa Gowda, the registrar of the Mangalore University, who was the chief guest of the occasion, said that Yakshagana is a world of festival, which has a history of 300 – 400 years old. Further speaking about the glories of Yakshagana, he said that getting the students interested in the art is the only way of preserving and safeguarding it.
Karnataka Yakshagana Academy President Kumble Sundar Rao delivered the presidential address, in which he mentioned that the meaning of art has changed with time, and urged people to encourage the art of Yakshagana.
Revealing certain interesting facts about the art of Yakshagana, he said that although the art originated in the Ghats, it was not nurtured. However, the people of DK and Udupi took special pains to protect and preserve it. He said that the art of Yakshagana should be presented in such a way that it should be considered to be representative of not only the twin district, but entire Karnataka. He also urged the government to support the art.
