Mangalore, June 29, 2012: Basudeb Acharia, Lok Sabha member and senior CPI (M) leader, addressed the gathering at the Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) Palghat Division Conference in Town Hall on June 28, Thursday, and said that India’s working classes are finding it increasingly difficult to make both ends meet. He added that the BJP and Congress governments’ wrong neo-liberal policies are to be blamed for this.

Further, he said that labour unions across the country, irrespective of their political affiliations, are opposing the government’s wrong labour policies, and railway employees have to take part in this movement.

Flaying the former NDA government and the present UPA government of following flawed policies that puts common people into trouble, he demanded to know if any of these governments ever took the trouble of reviewing the impacts of their policies on the working classes. He commented that governments must make sure about the security of the society’s weaker sections before implementing their policies.

Stating that the government must learn from international current events, he said that the Wall Street protest in the US ought to have been an eye opener for the Indian Government. Pointing out that several European governments have collapsed because they implemented wrong economic policies, he said that a socialist came to power in France after several years. He urged the government to learn its lessons from these international developments.

Urging railway employees to stay united in their fight for their rights, he said that they must oppose privatization of the railways and oppose any move to introduce foreign investment in the insurance sector.

Mehboob Ali and Mathrew Syriac P. were elected as the president and secretary of DREU, respectively, during this conference.
