Nitte July 9, 2012: Dr. Malavika Kapur, Visiting Professor, National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore & Former Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology, NIMHANS inaugurated Four Day’s workshop on ‘Introduction to Therapeutic Counselling for Engineering Teachers, organized by the Department of Counselling, Welfare, Training & Placement, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte on July 9, Monday.
In her key note address she said “in order to treat mentally weaker section, psychologists should go to community and learn what their needs are and help the people from their roothood to get success”. “Conscious mind is like a first layer of the iceberg which is visible and unconscious mind is like its inner layers which is invisible. Psychologists should understand the unconscious mind of such people to help them out. Psychiatrists should undergo series of training sessions before dealing with such people suffering from psychological problems and whatever you learn through this training should reach to your student community”, she added.
Principal, Dr.Niranjan N.Chiplunkar, in his presidential address said “due to lot of competitions and pressure for greater expectation, students may lose confidence in academics and end up in depression. Teachers should identify such students and counsel them or direct them to a professional psychiatrist for proper counseling”.
Prof. Shalini K.Sharma, Head, Department of Counselling, welfare, training and placement and the organizer of the workshop welcomed the gathering and gave the significance of the workshop. Dr.Sharada G.Prabhu introduced the chief guest and compeered the programme. Mr.Bharath delivered the vote of thanks. Participants, mostly senior faculty limited to 50 from various Engineering colleges all over the state are being participated in the workshop
