Wife Arrested in Businessman Sudeep Rai Suicide Case in Karkala

Karkala, Apr 12, 2026: Karkala police have arrested Soumya Shetty (28), wife of Belthangady-based businessman Sudeep Rai, in connection with his suicide.

Sudeep Rai, a native of Nelyadi in Puttur, had entered into a registered marriage with Soumya Shetty, a resident of Kaje in Karkala and an employee at the Sub-Registrar’s office in Puttur, on February 17. The couple later resided at Banglegudde Kaje in Joduraste, Karkala.

According to the complaint, on March 17, when Sudeep was travelling with his mother towards Nelyadi in Kadaba taluk for a religious function, Soumya allegedly intercepted their car on a scooter, verbally abused him, and issued death threats.

Sudeep later returned to Karkala. On March 22, he reportedly attempted suicide by consuming poison and succumbed on March 24 at a hospital in Mangaluru.

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s father, Damodar Rai, alleging mental harassment and abetment to suicide, a case was registered at Karkala Town Police Station.

The investigation was entrusted on April 1 by Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar to Inspector Manjappa D.R. of Karkala Town Police Station. Following the collection of evidence and preliminary inquiry, police arrested Soumya Shetty on April 11 and produced her before a court, which remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.
