Uppinangady, Sep 11, 2025: A jewellery fraud case has been reported in Uppinangady, where unidentified persons allegedly cheated a jewellery shop owner by posing as genuine customers and using a cheque along with a fake NEFT confirmation.

According to the complaint, the jeweller first received a phone call from a woman who claimed she urgently needed ornaments. She said she would send a boy with a cheque and requested the ornaments be handed over to him. Trusting her, the jeweller accepted the cheque and gave the ornaments.

Fraud

Later, the woman allegedly asked the jeweller not to deposit the cheque, promising to transfer the amount via NEFT instead. She even sent a screenshot of the supposed online transaction through WhatsApp and further instructed the jeweller to send more ornaments by bus. However, no money was credited to the shop’s account. In all, jewellery weighing 53 grams was taken through this fraudulent method.

Police Sub-Inspector Avinash clarified that the woman had never physically visited the shop. He cautioned that handing over ornaments solely on the basis of phone calls and WhatsApp messages was unsafe and added that if the matter involves a cheque, it may come under the Cheque Bounce Act.

Uppinangady police have registered a complaint and are verifying the facts before taking further action.
