Ullal, Oct 16, 2026: A fire broke out at an allegedly unauthorised scrap shop operating from a rented room at Chetana Nagar in Kumpala on Thursday evening, destroying a large quantity of scrap materials.

Abdul Tufail was reportedly running the scrap shop from a small rented room without a licence from the Someshwara Town Municipal Council. The municipal council had allegedly issued three notices to the shop owner, but he continued the business without obtaining the required permission.

The fire reportedly broke out inside the shop after it had closed for the day on Thursday evening. Local residents rushed to the spot and attempted to douse the flames, ensuring that the fire did not spread to neighbouring houses. Fire and emergency services personnel arrived promptly and brought the blaze under control.

Residents expressed concern that the incident could have resulted in a major disaster had it occurred at night, as Chetana Nagar is a densely populated locality with several houses nearby.

The incident also disrupted traffic on the narrow Kumpala main road for several hours. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

Someshwara Town Municipal Council Vice-President Ravishankar Someshwara and councillors Harish Kumpala and Manoj Kattemane visited the spot and inspected the scene.

Members of both the ruling party and the opposition in the municipal council have repeatedly urged officials to take action against scrap shops operating without licences within the Someshwara municipal limits.
