Udupi police book two for communal posts on Banu Mushtaq’s Dasara inauguration

Udupi, Aug 24, 2025: Days after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq would inaugurate the Mysuru Dasara, Udupi district police registered two cases against individuals for allegedly posting communal and provocative content on social media.

Police said Jagadish Udupa posted on Facebook that the government’s decision was “an insult to Hindu religion” and issued warnings of consequences. In a separate case, the Facebook page ‘Sudeep Shetty Nitte’ questioned Mushtaq’s faith and accused the Congress of “hurting Hindu sentiments.”

Both cases were filed under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for promoting enmity between communities.

Mushtaq, who won the International Booker Prize this year for her Kannada short story collection Heart Lamp, will inaugurate Mysuru Dasara 2025.
