Udupi/Karkala, Oct 6, 2026: Manipal and Karkala police have arrested three accused who had allegedly remained absconding for several years despite warrants issued against them in separate cases.
Manipal police arrested two accused who had allegedly been evading court proceedings for 18 years in a theft case. The accused, identified as Mohammed Haneef and Fayaz Mohammed, were traced and arrested during operations in Ullal and Talapady by head constables Chetan and Manjunath.
The two accused were produced before the court, which imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each and disposed of the case, police said.
In a separate operation, Karkala police arrested H Venkatesh of Shivamogga, who had allegedly been absconding for around nine years in four cases registered at Karkala police station.
The cases were pending before the Karkala ACJM and JMFC court. Venkatesh had allegedly stopped appearing before the court after securing bail and being released from prison in 2009. The cases subsequently reached the Long Pending Case (LPC) stage and warrants were issued against him.
Police had arrested Venkatesh in 2017 and produced him before the court. However, he was granted bail while in judicial custody and again allegedly failed to appear before the court.
Acting on the latest warrant, a team led by PSI Naveen Borkar, along with head constable Chandra Billava and police constable Santosh Siddarayyappa, traced and arrested Venkatesh in Pandavapura, Mandya district, on the night of October 3.
He was produced before the Karkala ACJM and JMFC court on October 4. The court remanded him to judicial custody until October 17, following which he was sent to Hiriyadka prison, police said.
