Udupi: Thieves steal gold jewellery, watch worth Rs 48.5 lakh from house in Padubidri

Udupi, Jan 29, 2026: Thieves broke into a house at Aftab Manzil on Deen Street in Nadsalu village and made away with gold jewellery weighing 70 pavans, valued at around ₹48 lakh, along with a Rado wristwatch worth ₹50,000. The burglary reportedly took place on Tuesday night.

According to police, the burglars broke open the door lock to gain entry into the house and then forced open an iron cupboard and the locker inside it, from where they stole the valuables. The incident came to light on Wednesday morning.


Padubidri theft


A woman residing in the house had locked it and gone to her daughter’s house, located within the same premises, on the evening of January 27. When she returned the next morning, she found the house broken into.

At the time of the incident, the house owner’s daughter-in-law had gone to her mother’s house, while the son was in Dubai. He had reportedly travelled to China on business when the theft occurred.

It is also reported that the house was fitted with a CCTV system with a SIM card, which was stolen by the burglars. However, sources said alerts from the CCTV SIM were linked to the son’s SIM, and his mobile phone was reportedly out of network range at the time of the incident.

The theft has caused concern among residents, as the house is located in a densely populated area with several houses nearby.

Udupi district Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabhu D T, Kaup Circle Inspector Azmath Ali, Padubidri Police Station Inspector Shaktivela, along with other officials, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. Fingerprint experts, a dog squad and a special team of scientific experts also examined the scene.

Police have formed three special teams to crack the case and launched a hunt for the thieves.
