Udupi: Man attempts self-immolation at Kalsanka Circle; police avert tragedy

Udupi, Feb 23, 2026: Panic gripped the public on Sunday evening after a man attempted suicide at the busy Kalsanka Circle area in the city. A major tragedy was averted due to the swift action of the city police and social worker Nityananda Olakadu.

An unidentified man arrived at the spot carrying a bottle filled with petrol, poured it over himself, and threatened to set himself on fire. The incident created tension among motorists and pedestrians for some time. It is yet to be ascertained whether the man was under the influence of alcohol or suffering from a mental health issue.

Suicide attempt


The incident occurred during peak traffic hours, disrupting traffic regulation duties of the police personnel on the spot. Initially, the police managed to seize the petrol bottle from him. However, he returned with another bottle filled with petrol and again poured it over himself, shouting that he would set himself ablaze.

Acting promptly, the police personnel prevented him from lighting the fire and brought the situation under control. He was later taken into custody and provided counselling. Arrangements were subsequently made to send him back to his hometown, Gadag.

City Police Station Sub-Inspectors Narayan and Gangappa were involved in the operation and ensured that no untoward incident occurred.
