Udupi: David D’Souza murder case accused gangster shot in leg while trying to escape police custody

Udupi, Aug. 24, 2026: Notorious gangster Anuj Patil (35), a prime accused in the David D’Souza murder case, was shot in the leg by police after he allegedly attacked police personnel and attempted to escape from custody on Monday.

According to sources, police were taking Patil to Hebri when he allegedly assaulted the personnel and tried to flee. During the incident, he reportedly attempted to snatch a weapon from a sub-inspector of the Kollur Police Station and fire at the police.

To bring the situation under control and in self-defence, Kundapura Police Station Sub-Inspector Nanja Nayak reportedly opened fire, hitting Patil in the leg. The injured accused was immediately shifted to the Udupi District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Patil is a key accused in the David D’Souza murder case. He is alleged to have arranged logistics for the operation by sending shooters, including Raju and his associates, to carry out the contract killing.

Originally from Bihar, Patil is reportedly involved in criminal activities in Mumbai and had been evading the police since 2017. A case has also been registered against him under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for alleged involvement in organised crime.

A total of 11 criminal cases have reportedly been registered against Patil across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Daman and Diu and Karnataka. Notably, 10 of these cases are registered under the Arms Act.
