Udupi: 42-year-old autorickshaw driver drowns in river at Herga

Udupi, Apr 28, 2026: A 42-year-old autorickshaw driver from Herga village drowned while swimming in a river, and his body was recovered the next morning.

The deceased has been identified as Sujith Kumar (42), son of Narayana Poojary (75), a resident of Herga village in Udupi taluk.

According to the complaint filed by Narayana Poojary, Sujith Kumar, who worked as a rental autorickshaw driver, left home at around 6 am on April 26 for work. Later, at about 12:45 pm, he reportedly went for a swim in the Holebagilu river in Herga village.

During the swim, he is believed to have accidentally drowned. His body was found on the riverbank at around 7 am on April 27.

A case has been registered at the Manipal police station under UDR No. 22/2026 under Section 194 of the BNSS.

Further investigation is in progress.
