Mangalore, March 9: Those who have seen the popular comedy play Oriyarduri Asal will have much to relish seeing its cinematic version soon. To be released next month, the movie by playwright Vijayakumar Kodailbail will feature songs by Udit Narayan and S.P. Balasubramaniam.
“Udit Narayan will be singing the song for the scene where the hero, a Mumbai man, is convincing his lover, a Tuluva girl, to come to Mumbai,” says Mr. Kodailbail, who had also directed the play that had successful shows in Mangalore, Mumbai and abroad.
While this is the first time that Mr. Udit Narayan is singing in a Tulu movie, Mr. Balasubramaniam is singing in the Tulu movie after seven years. This will be the first Tulu movie where our own Guru Kiran will be singing too.
Mr. Kodailbail said the intention of choosing Mr. Udit Narayan was only to suit the character in the movie. “I wanted a Mumbai man’s accent of Tulu,” he says.
The song is a mix of Hindi-Marathi-Tulu. It begins with Hindi phrase Mujhe Tumse Pyar Ho Gaya … and then switches to Tulu Bombaida Oore Kait Namma… and ends with the popular Marathi phrase Sundara Sundara Amchi Mumbai … It took time for Mr. Kodailbail to get across to Mr. Udit Narayan. The singer has now asked him to get in touch with him directly, next time. May be we can have more Tulu songs from him in the days to come.
In the studio, “I gave the lyrics of the song and explained the meaning,” Mr. Kodailbail said. The singer wrote down the lyrics in Hindi and then sang them. “A few corrections were made in his expression and the song was recorded in seven hours,” he said.
Mr. Kodailbail said he had retained only 20 per cent of his popular play in the cinema, which is his first directorial venture. “I have retained the punch dialogues of the play and its three lead actors – Navin D. Padil, Arvind Bolar and Rajesh Bantwal,” he said. He has planned to release the film by April 17. “I will showcase the film at all the places where my plays have been staged.
I want my film to set a new trend similar to the way my play did,” he said.
