Udupi, August 3, 2025: The Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet has appointed Udaya Kumar Shetty as the member-secretary of the Law Commission of India. Shetty, who was serving as Additional Secretary in the Legislative Department of the Ministry of Law and Justice, assumed charge on Saturday.
A native of Heggunje village in Brahmavara Taluk of Udupi district, Shetty has served in the Ministry for over 25 years in various roles, including Superintendent (Legal) in the Law Commission, Assistant Legislative Counsel, Deputy Legislative Counsel, Joint Secretary and Legislative Counsel, and Additional Secretary.
An alumnus of Mangalore University and Bengaluru University, Shetty holds LL.B and LL.M degrees in Labour Laws. Prior to his service in the Union government, he worked as a law lecturer at Vaikunta Baliga College of Law, Udupi.
On July 25, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented Shetty with the Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT) Certificate of Exceptional Service for his exemplary contribution in drafting the new Income Tax Bill, 2025. The honour was conferred during the 166th Income Tax Day celebrations in New Delhi.
