UPCL must implement expert committee recommendations – Shobha Karandlaje

Udupi, March 16, 2012 : The government will not approve the second unit of UPCL till it implements expert committee recommendations, said Shobha Karandlaje, the state energy and power minister

At a recently held press conference, she announced that the expert committee of environmental scientists, appointed to make a study of the adverse effects of UPCL on the environment, has submitted its report, in which it is has recommended certain steps to undo the damage already caused by the coal-based thermal power plant to the environment.

She said that the government will not approve the second unit of the UPCL until and unless the plant adopts the required pollution control measures in the best interests of agriculture and environment.

Further, she said that the government expects the company to make the required changes as suggested by the expert committee report by mid-June.

She also revealed her intention of visiting the UPCL area and interact with affected people.
